About



‘Who needed sets, when Rayner effectively had six pieces of human scenery to play with? [...] It was fantastically detailed stuff, intrinsic to the storytelling.’- Erica Jeal, The Guardian, SERSE (Director)
--------------------

Hello - I’m Sam.

I’m a director and movement director - working across theatre, opera and stand-up comedy.

I’m currently Resident Director of Back to the Future (West End) and Joint Artistic Director of Voloz Collective, an award-winning international physical theatre company.

I make playful, highly physical work - from acrobatic reinventions of classics to genre-bending new writing. I’m drawn to shared experiences of wonder and possibility - and the vulnerability these create. For me, the body is central to how these stories are told.

My productions have been selected as a Critic’s Pick in The New York Times and Playbill, and featured in The Guardian’s “Readers’ Favourite Stage Shows of 2022”. My movement sequences have been described as “intensely funny” (The Guardian) and “a fearless display of physicality that shape shifts from ludicrous tomfoolery to raw menace” (The List).

Early in my career, I worked as a movement director for stand-up and sketch comedy, collaborating with Jack Whitehall, Leo Reich, Liam Williams and Richard Gadd - and shaping physical sequences for Netflix, Tiger Aspect, HBO and A24.

As a movement director, my work now focuses on long-form narratives. I build distinct physical languages, ranging from tightly choreographed slapstick to psychologically-driven, magic-realist sequences.
My work is informed by my training at l’École Jacques Lecoq - but often departs from it.

I speak French and Spanish with professional working fluency, and have a basic understanding of Arabic (MSA).

My full CV is available on request - feel free to get in touch here.
